NHTSA Crash Test Ratings for 2011
Those 5 Star Crash Test Ratings that we’ve become so accustomed to seeing are in for a change with the 2011 MY vehicles. NHTSA’s rating system changes with production of 2011 model year vehicles.

For 2011, that abundance of top scores is bound to change, at least for the federal government’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP). It will be updated with new injury force limits and new test dummies—with the result likely being fewer four- and five-star scores across the board. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has called it the most significant changes since the program began in 1979. Also to be phased in beginning for 2011 is the long-anticipated pole side-impact test.

The new pole test—representing a side collision with a thin, solid barrier like a tree or utility pole—simulates one of the deadliest types of accidents. Specifically, the vehicle hits a ten-inch vertical pole at a 75-degree angle, at up to 20 mph, its impact centered at the front of the driver’s door and behind the windshield pillar. Automakers won’t have to meet the pole-test standards with all their vehicles right away. Under a phased compliance period, 100 percent of 2014 models are required to meet the standards but only 20 percent of 2011 models.

The New York Times reports that the pole test is more complicated because it’s not simply a matter of preventing structural deformation from a wide side barrier; new two-section airbags might be necessary, with a softer upper section to protect the head and chest combined with a firmer lower section to protect the pelvis and hold the occupant in position.

Don’t be surprised if many of those previous 5 Star rated vehicles now become 4 Star rated vehicles.
They are not less safe - the requirements have just become stricter.

GM's 2011 Vehicles
I had the opportunity to attend GM's 2011 Fleet & Commercial Product Preview in Detroit this week. The following are some highlights from the preview.

2011 Chevrolet Cruze
The all-new Chevrolet Cruze is GM's all-new compact car powered by either a 1.8 liter 4cylinder or a 1.4 liter Ecotec turbo. The Cruze Eco model equipped with a 6 speed manual transmission will offer an estimated 40 mpg highway. I had the opportunity to drive a couple of the Cruze models and I was extremely impressed with the performance and interior space of the new Cruze.

2011 Buick Regal
One word "European". This is a mid-size car that drives better than many of the near luxury European or Japanese sedans. Recently I drove a new Acura TSX and after having driven the new Regal, I would say Acura has some serious competition. The Regal will initially only be available in CXL trim with a 2.4 liter Ecotec 4 cylinder (30 mpg highway) and a 6 speed automatic transmission. Optional is a 2.0 liter Ecotec turbo (29 mpg highway) with a 6 speed manual transmission. 18" alloy wheels, leather trim and heated front seats are all standard.

2011 Buick LaCrosse
One word "Perfect". This is one gorgeous automobile. Motor Trend magazine in their March 2010 issue compared the Buick LaCrosse CXS against the Lexus ES350...and the LaCrosse won! In fact the subtitle of the article was "Will the better Buick please stand up". If you haven't had the opportunity to drive the LaCrosse, you need to get out and do it as soon as possible. You will be amazed at the quality and performance of this car.

2011 Chevrolet Silverado HD & GMC Sierra HD
The Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra heavy-duty lineup is broader than ever with 11 2500HD models and 8 single- and dual-rear-wheel 3500HD models – including a new 3500HD Crew Cab with a 6.5-foot cargo box. All models bring greater capability, improved ride and handling and a greater feeling of driver control. Depending on the model:

  • Segment-best fifth-wheel towing capacity of 20,000 pounds (9,072 kg)
  • Segment-best conventional towing capacity increases up to 23 percent, with a maximum of 16,000 pounds (7,272 kg)
  • Segment-best payload capability of 6,335 pounds (2,873 kg) on a complete vehicle
  • Segment-best Gross Combined Weight Rating increases to 27,500 pounds (12,500 kg)
  • Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings increases up to 17 percent to 13,000 pounds (5,909 kg)
  • Front Axle Weight Rating increases by up to 25 percent to 6,000 pounds (2,721 kg)
  • Snow plow capability is now enabled for all 4WD cab configurations

The list of new vehicles goes on with the Cadillac CTS Coupe (stunning) and the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe (stunning and very fast). Of course GM also has the successful and popular carry-over vehicles in the Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain.

Fleeting Tidbits
The EPA has certified the 2011 Ford Fiesta at 40 mpg highway - making it the most fuel efficient car in its class. The Fiesta achieved this 40 mpg rating equipped with Ford's all-new 6 speed PowerShift automatic transmission. The Fiesta's 40 highway mpg rating is 5 miles per gallon better than the Honda Fit and 4 miles per gallon better than the Toyota Yaris.

Hyundai Motor America has named Richard Pipenhagen as Corporate Sales Manager. Pip will be heading up Hyundai's commercial fleet sales operation. With Hyundai's new 2011 Sonata and Tucson, he will have some excellent new vehicles to offer to commercial fleet buyers.
